Dale's yard through the season -
as of 10/15/2011
There
are still lots of leaves on the trees and shrubs. |
Many houseplants are still outside. I moved them under cover for the two days
of freezing weather I've had in Gardiner. |
The compost bin has cooled somewhat but is still working good.
I'm going through the banked trees and shrubs and trying to get
as many as possible planted.
Check out the Yardscaping website which is part of the Board of
Pesticides site at www.Maine.gov . They have
added more great materials and links for
low maintenance yard management. You may want to make plans for next spring.
The rustic grape arbor worked great. This week I will prune the
grape vines.
I've planted nearly all my flower bulbs and most of the garlic
for next year.

LEFT OVER TREES AT DALE'S
Energy items - Update for 2010-2011
available soon.
----------------------
The winter of 2010-11 isn't yet over but we are already beginning
to compare data. While it seems to have been a long winter, the Heating Degree
days were about average. Last winter [2010] was simply so warm that it seemed colder
this year.
Yes, our snowfall is above normal. And since we are receiving
snow in February and March, unlike last year, again it seems much more harsh
than usual.
The winter of 2009-10 snowfall was about
average but, it nearly all arrived at the end of 2009 and beginning of
2010. We received little in the late winter.
Our rain is still below normal year-to-date. What we have
received comes in short heavy downpours.
In 2009-10 our Heating Degree Days were about 10% below normal.
So... your heating oil or propane use should have been about 10% what you
normally use. Don't give yourself too much credit if you used less that in past
years. It may have simply been that you didn't need any.
