Our History

Augusta Nature Trail

Recent efforts include watershed restoration projects at China Lake, Togus Pond, Pleasant Pond, and the Tri-Watershed area including Webber Pond, Threemile Pond, and Threecornered Pond. These projects have combined technical fieldwork with community outreach and long-term planning to protect local water bodies from nutrient pollution and support fish habitat restoration.

In addition to project implementation, we offer services like GIS mapping, conservation planning, and public workshops, and we remain committed to connecting residents with the tools and knowledge needed to care for their land and water.

Established in 1947, the Kennebec County Soil & Water Conservation District (KCSWCD) is a locally led, non-regulatory public organization dedicated to conserving natural resources through technical assistance, education, and community engagement. For over 75 years, we’ve worked alongside landowners, towns, and partner agencies to protect soil health, improve water quality, and promote sustainable land use across Kennebec County.

Over the past two decades, KCSWCD has led and supported numerous watershed-based initiatives funded by state and federal programs, including Clean Water Act §319 and 604(b) grants and the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF). Our work has focused on reducing polluted runoff through erosion control, road and shoreline stabilization, and the installation of Best Management Practices (BMPs).
